          Passage: Psalm 126:1-6

William Carey, known today as the Father of the Modern Mission Movement, did not seem like a likely candidate to be used in a mighty way by God. He was taken out of school before he could formally get a degree and put to work as a cobbler’s apprentice. After he was saved and felt called to preach, it took three years before the ordaining counsel in his church would ordain him. In his first pastorate, he had to continue work as a cobbler to pay any expenses for his family and even then, it was barely enough to get by. When he challenged the Baptist pastors in his association to support a foreign mission work, they rejected his proposal. Yet he didn’t quit.

His first proposal for a missions sending group was made in 1787. Five years later, in 1792, the Association adopted a resolution “to form a Baptist society for propagating the gospel among the heathen.” In 1793, Carey went to India as the first missionary. It would be about seven years before he saw the first convert in India and he suffered many hurts along the way. Yet, he continued and his work of translation and his testimony of mission inspired thousands and led to the change in conviction that helped launch the world-wide mission work that carries on today. Carey is said to have stated that there was nothing special about him except perhaps one thing. He said he knew how to plod. In other words, he had a conviction that he would not quit on the work he knew God wanted him to do no matter how difficult things might be. God wants us to have that same spirit. He is always at work and He has a plan for you, every believer and every local church. Jesus said we would face trials and opposition, but then gave this great promise - He has overcome the world!
