Do Not put Your Confidence in the World

Pray – (1/2 minute)

Read – (2 1/2 minutes) – “When Esther’s words were reported to Mordecai, he sent back this answer: ‘Do not think that because you are in the king’s house you alone of all the Jews will escape. For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to royal position for such a time as this?’ ” (Esther 4:12-14)
   Passage: Matthew 6:25-34

After King Xerxes had made Esther his wife and queen of Persia, he elevated a man named Haman to be second to him over the kingdom. Haman was a wicked, prideful, godless man who convinced Xerxes to instruct people to bow down to him. Mordecai refused. This caused Haman to not only want to kill Mordecai, but he determined to annihilate the entire population of Jews in Persia. He made up a lie about the Jews and got Xerxes to give him authority to do just that. Mordecai sent word to Esther that she needed to appeal to the king to overturn that edict.
Esther responded by pointing out the danger of approaching Xerxes uninvited. Mordecai challenged her to do it anyway and also expressed confidence that God would deliver His people somehow if Esther refused. When you are a child of God, you can live with confidence that heaven is your eternal home, and nothing can take away your salvation. You can also rely on God’s promises to care for you. Don’t put your confidence in the things of this world. Put your hope in God. He will take care of you!
