Developing Servant/Leaders
Pray – (1/2 minute)
Read – (2 1/2 minutes) – “It was He who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become measure, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.” (Ephesians 4:11-13)
Passage: John 13:1-17
The Apostle Paul was used by God in an incredible way as a servant/leader for Christ, but he understood that he couldn’t do God’s work alone and he understood God’s plan to develop servant/leaders to carry on the work in every generation. He explained in Ephesians 4 that God has gifted all believers personally with spiritual gifts that God wants them to use in service. God also has gifted the church with people He calls to fill certain positions in the church such as the role of pastor. What God never intended is for the pastor to do all the work.
Paul specifically says that the main function for the pastor/teacher is to “prepare God’s people for works of service.” This entails identifying people with their giftedness, inviting them to serve in different areas of ministry and then investing time in training and working with them so that they can be the best servant/leaders they can be for Christ. No one is called to do everything in God’s local church, but everyone can do something. Find your something and serve the Lord with all your heart.
