Passage: Mark 1:16-18
Elisha was called by God to be Elijah’s successor as a prophet. When he was invited to join up with Elijah, he said yes and became Elijah’s assistant. It would be around seven more years before he would assume Elijah’s office. During those years, he walked with Elijah. He learned from Elijah. He came to understand the way God spoke to Elijah and the responsibilities that God had for Elijah.
Preparation always comes ahead of assuming a position. A good servant leader must first be a good servant/follower. When Jesus called Simon and Andrew to be His disciples, He told them that He would make them “fishers of men.” Along with the other disciples, Jesus then invested time with them. Then He sent the Holy Spirit to empower them to carry out the mission He had assigned for them to do. The preparation of a person for a position of leadership and the investment of time in training is essential to helping God’s people be effective. Being a good follower in service for Christ is good preparation for being a servant/leader.
