Read – (2 1/2 minutes) – “. . . Elijah went up to him and threw his   cloak around him. Elisha then left his oxen and ran after Elijah. ‘Let me kiss my father and mother good-by,’ he said, ‘and then I will come with you.’ ‘Go back,’ Elijah replied. ‘What have I done to you?’ So Elisha left him and went back. He took his yoke of oxen and slaughtered them. He burned the plowing equipment to cook the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate.” (1 Kings 19:19c-21b)
      Passage: Jeremiah 1:4-8

The cloak that Elijah wore represented his office as God’s prophet. By throwing it onto the shoulders of Elisha, he was indicating that God was calling Elisha to be his successor and he was inviting Elisha to say yes to that call. Elisha’s request to go kiss his parents good-by was not a sign of hesitation. It was an indication of his love and respect for his parents and his commitment to make the adjustment in his life to follow God’s plan.
Henry Blackaby, in his work, Experiencing God, points out that God’s invitation to join Him in His work involves a crisis of belief that requires faith and action along with making adjustments in life. The crisis may be as simple as not thinking you are qualified or capable of being in a certain leadership position, but God is not interested most in your ability. He wants your availability. It is His work and He will enable you to do whatever He calls you to do. Say yes to His invitation. You will experience God in special ways when you do.
