Identify Future Servant/Leaders

Pray – (1/2 minute)

Read – (2 1/2 minutes) – “The Lord said to him, ‘. . . and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel-Meholah to succeed you as prophet.’ . . . So, Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen, and he himself was driving the twelfth pair.” (1 Kings 19:15-19)
     Passage: Luke 6:12-13

God’s plan for carrying on His Kingdom’s work involves passing on the gospel to and the work of the Kingdom to each new generation. God identified a man named Elisha to take Elijah’s place in the future. When Elijah went to meet Elisha, he found the kind of man who God could use. Elisha was dedicated to the Lord. His name which means, “God is Salvation”, was given to him by his father, Shaphat, whose name means, “He has judged”. This family had not followed the idolatrous example of Ahab and they remained dedicated to God. Elisha was also a diligent worker and he was devoted to his family.
The first step in developing servant/leaders is to identify people who God is calling to serve as leaders vocationally and as leaders within the church voluntarily. The characteristics in Elisha of being dedicated to Christ, being diligent to a task and loving one’s family are all qualities that are found in strong servant/leaders in the church. Pray that the Lord will help your church identify people who will step into leadership roles.
