Read – (2 1/2 minutes) – “ Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.”
(1 Timothy 6:17)
Passage: 2 Corinthians 2:1-5
Are you rich? Chances are you would not claim to be, but in comparison to the majority of people around the world, you are. If you own more than one pair of shoes, have a choice of food for more than one or two meals a day, and have a car to drive, you are rich. Paul’s word to Timothy about what to tell those who are rich was not a criticism of money. It was a perspective and warning that money does not bring true security and contentment. That lies in our relationship with God through faith in Jesus.
Generosity and stewardship are keys to handling money in a godly, mature way. Jesus said, “Seek first the kingdom of God and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33) Deuteronomy 14:23 includes this word, “The purpose of the tithe is to teach you to put God first.” (TLB) Generosity in service through what you do and what you give is a key way to show that God has first place in your life. When you prioritize his kingdom with how you use your time, talent and treasures, you will find that there is greater joy in all you do.
