Read – (2 1/2 minutes) – “So when they met together, they asked Him, ‘Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom of Israel? He said to them, ‘It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by His own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.’ ” (Acts 1:6-8)
Passage: Luke 24:47-48
It is a sad reality that the majority of churches in America are declining. While many make all kinds of excuses for that, the simple fact is that many churches have forgotten or become confused about their mission. I once read a statement in one church’s bulletin during their annual stewardship campaign. It said, “Let’s try to help our church grow so we can meet our budget.” For a healthy church, a ministry budget is not the focus of their mission. It is church family’s plan for the support of their mission. The mission is to reach people for Jesus Christ.
Before Jesus ascended to heaven, He gave His disciples a mission. Be witnesses of who Jesus is, what He did and what He offers to anyone who will believe in Him and receive Him as Lord and Savior. That mission starts in Jerusalem, or your home area. It extends to Judea, which I think of as our state or local region. It goes to Samaria, which I look at as our nation. It then encompasses the ends of the earth, which is every part of the world. God loves people. People need Jesus. Our mission is to share Him with everyone; in every place we can.
