  Passage: Philippians 2:5-13

The disciples of Jesus did not see the image of a cross as some burden, like a financial or physical hardship, that a person bore stoically. The cross was an instrument of death. Anyone who carried a cross was on their way to their place of execution. Jesus knew that the redemption of the world would come through his crucifixion on a cross. When He took up the cross, He made the deliberate choice to do what only He alone could do, to pay the penalty for the sin of all mankind. That decision was made before the foundation of the world. (Revelation 13:8) In His humanity, the decision was sealed in the Garden of Gethsemane when Jesus prayed, “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” (Luke 22:42)
Surrendering to God’s will is a key of discipleship. God wants to use you to make a difference in this world. He has plans and purposes for you, but you must choose whether you will follow them or not. How do you find God’s will? Look in His Word. Spend time in prayer and learn to listen to the promptings of His Spirit. Look at the circumstances God brings and seek the counsel of godly people. The Spirit with you will give you the desire to do God’s will. Follow Him and be a disciple.
