Passage: Galatians 2:20
Some people have a misguided idea that denial of self is taking the philosophy of asceticism that renounces personal pleasures and profits. Jesus commented in His sermon on the mount that if people give good gifts to their children, “how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask.” (Matthew 7:11). Paul writes in 1 Timothy 6:17 that we should never put our hope in material things, but then says that believers should “put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.”
Self-denial is really an overflow of devotion. You practice self-denial every time you put your children, grandchildren’s schedule ahead of your own personal options and you don’t give that a second thought. When you put Jesus first, self-denial comes out of your devotion Him in obedience to the Word. You Heavenly Father enjoys seeing you enjoy things, but He wants you, as a disciple, to be willing to let Him alter your schedule or adjust your spending to join Him and be a blessing to others.
