Living Examples - Philip - Say Yes to Jesus
Pray – (1/2 minute)
Read – (2 1/2 minutes) – “ ‘Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.’ This proposal please the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the HolySpirit; also Philip . . . They presented them men to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them.” (Acts 6:3-6)
Passage: Psalm 135:1-4
Recently, when Chad was on vacation with his family at Disney World, they left the parks and went to Disney Springs, an area with shopping and restaurants. He noticed a little boy outside a store and realized the boy was waiting by the door while his mother shopped inside. The look on the boy’s face said it all. He could not imagine he had to be shopping with his mom while there were parks with rides, characters and fun at “the happiest place on earth” and his face seemed to say, “This is not the way it’s supposed to be.”
After Jesus ascended to heaven and sent the Holy Spirit to permanently indwelling the believers, the church was born and the Kingdom of God began to grow. That growth was threatened by a division within the church by the feeling of those who were primarily Greek speaking, that their widows were been treated differently than those who were primarily Hebrew speaking. The apostles realized that they were spending so much time trying to smooth this over that they were neglecting their primary call to preach and teach about Jesus. Their solution was to choose godly men out of the church to take over that task. Philip was one of the men they selected and his answer was one that would make him a man God used to touch many lives and be a living example for us today. He said YES!
