Passage: John 4:1-38
Philip was close friends with Stephen. They became servant/leaders in the early church and helped restore harmony in the fellowship. They both had a deep heart for Christ and were committed to share the gospel. When Stephen was martyred, Philip’s heart was broken, but in the midst of all, he knew God was in control and Stephen was well and eternally happy. After Stephen’s death, a persecution broke out against the believers in Jerusalem. Many of the believers left the city, but the result was the spread of the gospel.
Philip left as well, but He sensed the Spirit telling him to go to a city in Samaria. He was raised in a culture that hated Samaritans. The Apostles had been raised the same way, and they saw first hand how Jesus loved all people, including Samaritans. I don’t know if Philip had any question internally about God’s call for him to go to a people that he had grown up hating, but I do know he had the heart of Jesus and when God gave him a direction, he didn’t say no. He said YES!
