Choose Godly Mentors

Read – (2 1/2 minutes) – “He came to Derbe and then to Lystra where a disciple named Timothy lived, whose mother was a Jewess and a believer, but whose father was a Greek. The brothers at Lystra and Iconium spoke well of him.”
(Acts 16:1-2)
Passage: 2 Timothy 2:1-7
A dad asked his son, “Do you know why people call me a Christian?” His son answered, “Maybe it’s because they don’t know you.” People in Lystra and its neighboring city of Derbe knew Timothy and they saw Christ in him. His life matched the testimony of his lips and his character matched his confession. We don’t know exactly when Timothy received Christ personally, but we do know that he was a positive witness for Christ.
As a young man, a large part of Timothy’s commitment and knowledge of Jesus came through the influence of his mother and grandmother. (2 Timothy 1:5) His dad was not a believer, but Timothy didn’t follow his dad’s example. He followed his mother’s and probably other older believers. He then imitated Paul. One of the most important things you can do as a disciple is to find godly people who can be mentors, either up close or from observing and knowing about their life from afar. Look for people who are living for Christ. Watch them and find out how they stay spiritually disciplined. Remember, others also watch you.
