Passage: Philippians 3:7-16
On his first missionary journey, Paul had Barnabas with him as a partner and they took a young man, John Mark. He was a relative of Peter relative and is the author of the Gospel bearing his name. However, Mark quit and returned home shortly into the mission. When the time came for a second mission journey, Barnabas wanted to take Mark again, but Paul adamantly refused. The disagreement was so strong, that Paul and Barnabas split up. Paul teamed up with Silas. Barnabas teamed up with Mark. (Acts 15:36-41) Paul probably wasn’t looking for a younger missions partner, but when he met Timothy, he saw the hand of God on Timothy and knew God could use Timothy in a mighty way.
One of the reasons was that Timothy was willing to make adjustments in his life to be able to do what God called him to do. The first adjustment was to be circumcised, so that he could go with Paul into the synagogues to preach Jesus as Messiah. (Paul didn’t require that of Titus, who was fully Greek). The second adjustment was to leave his home and go wherever God led. To be on mission with Jesus requires a willingness to make adjustments when God leads. That requires faith, not feelings, but any adjustment you make for Christ will be worth it all.
