Read – (2 1/2 minutes) – “Now these were the people of the province who came up out of the captivity of those exiles whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried captive to Babylonia. they returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own town.” (Ezra 2:1)
          Passage: Psalm 19:1-6

A year of time that took in 539-538 B.C. is one of the key years in the history of the Jewish people. In that year, King Cyrus of Persia, who had just conquered Babylon, issued an edict to allow the Jews to return to Jerusalem after 70 years in exile. Ezra, who was a priest and scribe who went to Jerusalem in 458 B.C., wrote of the history of that return and then of his ministry. In the history, he was inspired to give a detail of those who returned after the edict. Chapter two of Ezra is part of that detail. It consists of lists of people, who went, the families and towns they were connected to and what their positions were.

Paul tells Timothy in 2 Timothy 3:16, “All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching. . .” This information in this chapter was important to God’s people who came out of Babylon and returned to the Promised Land. It is important for us. It reminds me that God not only uses people, but God knows His people. He knew them then and He knows us now. Thank God for His love and grace for you.
