Determined Discipleship is Committed to Serve

Read – (2 1/2 minutes) – “In the same way, after supper He took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. But the hand of Him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table. The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed, but woe to that man who betrays Him.’ They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this. Also a dispute arose among themselves as to which of them was considered to be greatest.” (Luke 22:20-24)
   Passage: Psalm 56:1-13

‍ ‍It wasn’t their finest moment. Jesus had just finished sharing elements that would comprise what we observe as the Lord’s Supper, or Communion, to remember His sacrifice on the cross. He talked about his suffering, death and betrayal. The mood was somber, but instead of responding with concern, compassion and commitment, the disciples began to argue about which one of them was considered the greatest.

Jesus didn’t lambast them, but He did correct them. The issue wasn’t whether God designed people for greatness. He did. The problem is that our sin nature has turned God’s design upside down and the idea of what makes someone great in the eyes of men is not what makes people great in the eyes of God. Man’s evaluation of greatness is tied to power, prominence, performance, position and possessions. God’s evaluation is tied to service. In order to be a great disciple for Jesus, you must be determined to serve. Serve well.
