Passage: Luke 9:57-62
Martin Luther was one of the men God used to impact the world during the period in Christian history known as the Reformation. He was a Catholic priest who had come to realize that salvation does not come through any religious works we do, but is solely through faith in Jesus Christ. Because he had spoken out against the Catholic churches abuses and a works theology, he was called to stand before a religious counsel in Worms, Germany and told to recant or be branded a heretic and threatened with the possibility of being burned at the stake. He formulated his response and told the counsel, “I neither can nor will recant anything, for it cannot be either safe or honest for a Christian to speak against his conscience. Here I stand. I cannot do otherwise. God help me. Amen.”
Standing firm for Jesus requires a commitment founded upon the conviction of one’s confession that Jesus is Lord. Elijah stood firm on His confession that there is only one God of Israel. He was committed to follow God regardless of the consequences humanly, because he was solid in his confession spiritually. Stand firm for Christ and keep moving forward with Him.
