Trust God’s Commands

Read – (2 1/2 minutes) – “So he went to Zarephath. When he came to the town gate, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and asked, ‘Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink?’ As she was going to get it, he called, ‘And bring me, please, a piece of bread.’ ” (1 Kings 17:10-11)
     Passage: I John 5:1-3

The widow in Zarephath was at the end of her rope. The drought had brought a great depression to the entire region. She had no more money to buy whatever grain was still available, so she planned on making one more meal for herself and her son before they would experience death by starvation. When Elijah told her to back him a little bread, her reaction was to tell him how dire her situation was. Elijah told her to do it anyway and he gave her a promise from God. Bake a small cake of bread for Elijah first and then use the rest for herself and her son. God’s promise was that if she would trust Him by providing for God’s servant first, then God would ensure that the flour and oil would never run out.
The commands God gives us are not given to restrict us and hurt us. They are given to release us to learn to walk by faith and to help us to be all He designed for us to be. The widow who God used to help Elijah, learned that when she put God first and followed His commands, He showed Himself strong on her behalf and He took care of her. What He did for her, He will do for you. Trust His commands and live by God’s Word.
