Passage: Psalm 100:1-5
There were 102 passengers plus about 27 crew members who set sail on the Mayflower in the fall of 1620. When they landed near Plymouth Rock in December, winter had already set in. That first winter, half of the passengers and crew members died. If it wasn’t for two Indians, they probably would not have made another year. But because of the help of those Native Americans, they did and in the fall of 1621, a feast was held with those new settlers and about 90 Indians to give thanks to God for His providential care. In 1789, President George Washington issued the first Thanksgiving Proclamation and in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday of November as Thanksgiving Day.
On this day, take time to express thanks to God and experience His peace in your heart. Peace and thankfulness go hand in hand. God’s peace is a feeling of well-being and security. Expressing thankfulness acknowledges that God is the source of salvation through giving His Son, Jesus to pay for your sin. Thankfulness acknowledges that God has provided for you and has blessed you with relations in family and friends. Enjoy this day and be thankful. God has been good to you!
