      Passage: Acts 4:8-12

Cornelius grew up in a Roman culture that believed, like the Greek’s in multiple gods who were distant from men and had to appeased through works. He rose to the rank of Centurion in the Roman army, which showed that he was a man of great responsibility, leadership ability and obedience to authority. Along the way, he married and had a family that he cared for deeply. He also came to reject the religion of Rome, but was drawn to the faith of the Jews. He became a God-feared, meaning he accepted their belief in one God and much of their ethical standards, but he didn’t take the step to become a Jewish convert.

Cornelius appeared to have it all together. He was a family man. He was moral, law-abiding and had prominence in the community. He was a generous giver and he was religious. By the standards of the world, he was a good man, but by the standard of God, he was a lost man. The standard for being right with God and getting into heaven is perfection, but “all of us have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23) Cornelius needed to hear the gospel about what Jesus did for him on the cross and how he could have an eternal relationship with God. He responded and found eternal life through faith in Jesus. There is no other way.
