Living Examples - Matthias - Present and Available

Pray – (1/2 minute)

Read – (2 1/2 minutes) – “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God, just as I try to please everyone in everything I do, not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, that they may be saved. Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” (1 Corinthians 10:31 - 11:1)
      Passage: Acts 1:12-26

A large insurance company has developed a humorous theme for their commercials, in which young adults are going through training sessions by themselves or in a group to help them stop becoming like their parents. The gist of the commercials is that is a futile effort. The commercials end with a statement to the effect, “We can’t keep you from becoming like your parents, but we can help you with your insurance.” Everyone is an example for someone else. Someone pointed out “Some people are good examples of being a bad example.”

God wants you to make a difference in this world for Him. Throughout Biblical history, He has had people who followed Him and have set examples that we can follow. I call them living examples because they are living in heaven today and the Bible is God’s living Word. Paul challenged believers in Corinth to follow His example, which was built on his following the example of Christ. Paul is a well-known example, but there is another man whose example is just as strong even though is hardly known. That man is Matthias, the one God chose to replace Judas as one of the Twelve Apostles for the church. His two greatest qualities were that he was present and available. Are you?
