Read – (2 1/2 minutes) – “Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. ‘All this I will give you,’ he said, ‘if you will bow down and worship me.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.’ Then the devil left Him, and angels came and attended Him.” (Matthew 4:8-10)
     Passage: Psalm 95:1-11

We live in a material world. God created it. Satan has corrupted it. Satan wants you to think that happiness comes from the possessions you can hold in your hands. True happiness really comes from the people you hold in your heart. Satan knew that Jesus came to build a kingdom, so He tempted Jesus to have an earthly kingdom. The category of this temptation was the lust of the eyes, which is the temptation of acquisition. It is to value things above all else. Jesus would not bow to that.
Once again, Jesus quoted scripture and stood firm on God’s Word, and the scripture He used is the key in dealing with the temptation of self-centered acquisition. The problem with money or things is not in having them. The problem is in the priority you place on them. Whatever you value highest is what you worship. Jesus show by example that you are to be faithful in worship. Worship is seen in how you give back to God with your time, your talents, and your treasure. God promises to take care of you, but He wants you to put Him first. When you do, you will find victory over temptation and the secret of joy in contentment.
