Follow God’s Ways

Read – (2 1/2 minutes) – “Then the devil took Him to the holy city and had Him stand on the highest point of the temple. ‘If you are the Son of God,’ He said, ‘throw yourself sown. For it is written: ‘He will command His angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a sone.’ Jesus answered him, ‘It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ” (Matthew 4:5-7)
       Passage: Proverbs 3:5-6

Satan knew who Jesus was. In our English language, the conjunction “if” suggests possibility, but the Greek word is really a condition of certainty. The better translation is that Satan was saying “Since you are the Son of God …” The second temptation Satan used was in the category of the pride of life. He even quoted scripture back to Jesus from Psalm 91:11-12 about the angels begin available to catch Jesus and keep Him from hitting the ground after jumping off the Temple. Satan was suggesting that this would be a way to show the people that He was the Messiah.
However, Satan left out a line from verse 11, which talked about the Messiah being guarded as He walked on the path laid out for Him, and He omitted verse 13, which talked about the Messiah defeating Satan. Satan tempted Jesus to presume upon God and reveal Himself as Messiah in a way that God the Father had not determined. God’s Word shows us how to fulfill His purposes. Going our own way and then expecting Him to bless is presuming upon Him. Follow God’s ways and walk in victory.
